Since going Paleo my family has fallen even more in love with our grill. Paleo and grilling just work well together. The past couple of years I've even been stepping outside my grilling comfort zone more and more. Grilling things I'd never thought to have grilled before and trying new flavor combinations. I have to say I'm pretty thrilled with the results of most of my flavor experiments. In the past I'd never have thought to grill fruit, but it's amazing. Grilling fruit and adding it to traditionally savory dishes? Brilliant. Oh yes, and? New rule: every burger recipe for the rest of forever must contain grilled pineapple. OK, maybe more of a guideline. It's a seriously delicious combination though. This Smoky Grilled Pineapple Burger is always a crowd-pleaser at my house. It's not only Paleo, but Whole30, glutenfree, lower carb, and clean eating friendly. I promise you won't miss the bun! paleo, grilled pineapple burger, smoky
Yep, you read that right, I'm back to calorie counting. Using Sparkpeople on my Blackberry. I have not been able to get back to losing weight since, oh March or April maybe?! The scale goes up, the scales goes down a smidge, but NO real progress.
I am still flirting with Paleo. I am mostly struggling with the 'no milk products'. I love me my morning coffee with half and half, greek yogurt, and my whey protein (not sure if I'll give those up anytime soon? any paleo peeps want to explain why I should?). Other than that I've followed it so far. However currently I'm gaining weight. I'm up to 175. I still have 30 pounds to lose!
Enough. Calorie counting WORKS for me. No matter how much I WANT to listen to my body, be a mindful eater, go all hardcore Paleo, and all that jazz. I'm not THERE yet. I will be some day. However, that day is not today.
Today. I count calories.
You?

The "no milk" bit is what always held me back from trying paleo. Besides, we JUST got back to having gluten in our diets without detrimental reactions ... I don't think I could give it up again with a darn good medical reason :)
ReplyDeleteand thats all this is in a way.
ReplyDeletefinding what works for YOU and what you can stick with for life.
Im a mishmash noncalorie counting misfit
Not sure about Paleo, but with Primal, dairy is only restricted if it gives you health problems. I ended up restricting milk a bit, but not cheese, yogurt, etc. It didn't affect my weight loss. My main focus was eliminating grains and monitoring my fruit/starchy veggie intake.
ReplyDeleteBut no diet is one size fits all. Primal works for me because of my health problems. Otherwise, I'm not sure I could do it. :-)
I do not count calories or figure out my daily nutrient breakdown, not regularly that is. I do keep a hand written food log daily as a history to refer to back on when my progress stalls. When t does i will at times take a day or two there and break it down to help understand where my momentary problem is.
ReplyDeleteGood luck with the semi-Paleo approach, hope it works as you desire.
I'm a point counter. Does that count? ;)
ReplyDeleteGood luck..
ReplyDeleteI'm just like you. Calories are the only way it works for me.
ReplyDeleteI usually count calories, but I've pretty lazy on that front lately. I'm keeping track of how many calories I eat at meals and snacks, just not the daily total right now. I really need to get back into it!
ReplyDeleteIf it works for you, then do it!
I'm a calorie counter (SparkPeople) and it works for me. . . for now. We will see what the future holds but, like others have said, it's all about what works for YOU. :)
ReplyDeleteI count calories - it's the only thing that has ever worked for me. if I stop counting, I start gaining. I'm wondering how I'm going to manage when I reach goal - I may very well be a calorie counter for life...
ReplyDeleteI think we each need to go with what works for us. If you know calorie counting works and you can stick with it - do it. If it's Paleo, go for that. I read a bit about that recently and it was interesting but not for me. What has helped me enormously lately is my new restriction to eating all my snacks at the table. Makes a huge difference since I was struggling a lot with mindless snacking.
ReplyDeleteI don't know if counting actually works for me, so much as it helps me see what's better for me to eat. I really hate having the restriction put on me of only being able to have x-amount of something. How dare a computer tell me what my body needs!? But seeing the ratios of protein, fat and carbs really helps me make better food choices.
ReplyDeleteSo, I guess the answer is I count, but I don't wanna. ;)
I did Paleo, for like, a second. Not sustainable in real life. Therefore, not really interested. I have some friends that love it. I'm just not into it.
ReplyDeleteI've come off a period of intuitive eating where I've been doing much like you- gaining and losing the same 5 lbs. I'm only 10 lbs away from my comfortable weight- but it's driving me mad.
I just blogged about my decision to track again.
Scandalous.
I have to keep track too girfriend, I would be really great to just give my body what it wants but unfortunately its sausages, chips & dip, chocolate bars and oh yeah... beer! So as much as I have depriving myself of those things whenever i want them its that or be fat. I get it.. its not always fun but you can do this.. we support you!!oxxoxo
ReplyDeleteYou're stronger than I, I hate counting calories! But it works, it's a good push to get you back into good portion sizes & such. Good for you!
ReplyDeleteUltimately, calorie counting is what I always come back to in order to lose weight. I seem to be great at maintaining it by eating intuitively, but the only way I lose is if I track what I eat and keep it in the right calorie range.
ReplyDeleteI also use sparkspeople.
I'm becoming a tracker. At first I didn't really have to track anything. I had so much to lose that it was fine to just do a little. now I'm tracking and to see where I waste calories is amazing. Not surprisingly I was drinking most of mine.
ReplyDeleteit's a learning process, and I'm taking the long way around, but I'm still gonna arrive there.
Its definitely a learning process. I recently purchased a bodybugg, so I'm in the calorie counting camp too. Its been wildly helpful just knowing calorie counts for most foods we eat in order to make wise choices.
ReplyDeleteBut, even when we track, studies show that we underestimate our calorie consumption by 20-40%! Imagine what we do when we aren't counting.
Intuitive eating IS certainly the goal, to have a normal relationship with food, but I really do believe its a learning process.
