The 4 Hour Body...Hype or Help?

I'm starting a new series on my blog for the new year. I call it: Hype or Help? This is not simply another product review. Instead, I'll be taking the latest, 'greatest' diet, workout, or gadget and putting it through the paces, following their instructions and putting it to the test. I'll be testing out their claims and finding out myself if they live up to them, are they hype or help?

The blogs, Twitter, and You Tube are all a-buzz about Tim Ferriss's new book: The 4 Hour Body. Aha! My first victim, er test.

This book makes some pretty amazing claims. Like the diet can help you lose up to 20 lbs of fat in 30 days. I'm excited to put these claims to the test. I was going to start January 1, but that seems so...not me. I'm just not the I'll start Monday, I'll start January 1st, blah, blah, blah type. So, starting today, I will be following this book to the letter for 30 days. The diet, the supplement suggestions, everything. Well, probably no ice baths for me, ouch.

This month I gave it my best shot, following what I thought worked best for me, and lost a rather unimpressive 4 pounds. Can The 4-Hour Body beat that? I'm excited to find out.

I'll have a more detailed post coming with my starting stats, what exactly I'll be doing, etc. I'll be posting updates weekly at least on here. I also started another blog to track my food intake, workouts, etc on a daily basis: http://adventuresintracking.blogspot.com/

So, The 4-Hour body...hype or help? We'll see.

2011 Journal Exercises

I'm starting something new here on my blog and I hope many of you will join in. Starting some time in the first week of 2011 you will start seeing **2011 Journal Exercise as individual posts, or included with posts. Basically they are journal prompts for all of us to do. I think journaling is a hugely beneficial practice and I want to share that with you all. You can blog your response (leave a comment on the specific post with the link if you do that), leave it in the comments, or simply do what I'll be doing and start a spiral notebook dedicated to this.

We're all on similar journeys, whether it be to lose weight, get fit, reach a goal, or just become the best us we can be. I think participating, joining in, and benefiting from the community support will be awesome.

Whenever you see in red: **2011 Journal Exercise that's our latest journal prompt. I will be adding a tab which will include all the journal exercises up to date...so join in at anytime and lets make this year our best!

Looking Forward to 2011

I'm not exactly sure why I am so excited for the coming new year...but I am. I think it has a lot to do with what I believe 2011 holds; the goals and plans I have for this sparkling, shiny new year. Oh yes, I am going to CRUSH it in 2011. I generally laugh at the whole 'new year, new you' hooplah, but this year I go into this new year feeling like I truly AM a new me.

2011 will be my year to:

  1. Set clear written goals with the action steps I will take towards reaching them.
  2. Build healthy habits, for good, habits, one at a time.
  3. Continue on my course of trying new things and honing in on what works for me.
  4. Pay attention to and taking care of my body/mind/spirit.
  5. Reach my goal weight, I'm setting that at 140-145...but not in stone, as I fall further in love with muscle and weights we'll see where I wind up.
  6. Make a career not just a hobby of my writing.
  7. Get to the best me I can be one habit, one positive thought, one affirmation, one good choice at a time.
  8. Meet a ton of great people and have a blast all along the way!
That's the short list, lol. But I am excited for this year, I know deep down to my toes great things are coming my way. I intend to make 2011 remarkable. How about you? What are you looking forward to?

What I Learned in 2010

What a year it's been. I've had huge successes and I've failed some. I've kicked some butt and I've fallen off the wagon. I've faced a lot of fears and let a few win. I've lost some weight and I've gained some weight. But this year overall I have  learned more about myself and made bigger strides in being a healthier (mind and body) me than the previous 33!

So here it is, as concisely as I can manage, what I learned in 2010:

  • I'm a food addict, an emotional eater, a compulsive eater, and a binge eater. Quite the combination. I've learned oodles about how to deal with these issues, but I've also learned not to give SHAME about these things power over my life.
  • To like myself, to love myself, and how important taking care of myself is.
  • I'll never be perfect and that's OK.
  • There are tons of good, supportive, positive people out there and it's vitally important that I surround myself with them.
  • To reach out, to ask for help, and that it's OK to be vulnerable.
  • To try new things, read new information, but not be afraid to go against the current in knowing myself and what works for me. It's all about finding what works for me, not what the cool kids are doing.
  • I love weights and even lifting heavy.
  • I feel better with more protein and less carbs.
  • I will always be a runner no matter how fast, how far, or how often I run.
  • To forgive myself and that forgiveness of others is a gift--not something to be earned. I've also learned how important to me and my well-being forgiveness of others is.
  • It's OK for me to be great. I'm not over-shadowing or taking away from anyone else by becoming the best me. In fact, I owe it to me and the whole world to BE the best me I can be.
  • How important it is to pay attention and to trust myself.
  • I'm a fitness/running gear addict...and I'm OK with that.
  • The importance of: written goals, positive thinking, visualization, affirmations, commitment, focus, ditching excuses, consistency, balance, building good habits....

You get the idea...it's been an amazing year...yet somehow, deep down, I know that 2011 is going to be even BETTER!

I'll be sharing about some of these lessons in my upcoming posts. How about you? What did you learn in 2010?

Weigh In

Humph. Yes, that is the technical term.

OK, I weighed this morning and it said 181. That is .5 more lost. But it's for two weeks. I won't lie, this frustrates me. BUT it doesn't define me or the hard work I've put in this month. I've lost 3 pounds so far. Onward I say!

I'm not even going to mull over the reasons for this number or what this means for reaching my goal this month. I AM going to continue to kick butt the rest of this year. Period.

Diet and Narcolepsy

I realize this won’t exactly pertain to most of my readers, but on the off chance someone could find it in a search and be helped, I am posting it anyway. The rest of us could use this story as a reminder of the power of our diet!

As some of you know, my husband has narcolepsy. I realize most people’s knowledge of narcolepsy is limited to a silly scene from a movie. But, it is something my husband has struggled with for many years.  He has sleep apnea and cataplexy also.

He so struggled with his condition that when we got married he didn’t want to have kids because it is possibly genetic. I responded with, “I’m sure glad your parents had you!” Point made. He’s such a good father, and our kids are amazing, I’m glad he changed his mind on that.

Up until recently his doctor has told him that he had the most severe case of narcolepsy he’d ever seen (he is a sleep disorder specialist). My husband, even while on medications, was prone to multiple naps daily, the sudden, uncontrollable urge to sleep (needing to pull over while driving even and take a nap), and episodes of cataplexy. Basically cataplexy is when he had a sudden surge of emotion, happy, angry, or even someone telling a funny joke, he would lose all muscle control, so he basically fell over and his muscles became stiff and he couldn’t move although he is awake and alert in his mind and can hear what is going on around him, he appears to be out cold. This used to happen to him on a daily, sometimes multiple times, basis. He had many other minor symptoms, but as you can imagine this was a pretty life altering condition.

The first thing that changed his life was the medication Xyrem. This medication helped a lot. If you have narcolepsy and don’t take that, check with your doctor.

The second thing that has made a world of difference is he changed his diet. I had noticed from simply observing his reactions after he ate certain foods that sugar and most carbs had a profound effect on him. After eating a carb heavy meal or sugary treat, he would immediately have to nap. Like borderline coma nap.  Sugar and carbs also seemed to overall worsen his condition. Finally after 8 years of marriage he decided I just might be right (can I have that in writing dear?).

Last January he gave up sugar (he was a mtn dew addict) and most carbs (especially the unhealthy processed ones). He eats meats, dairy, eggs, nuts, beans, fruits, vegetables, and occasionally oatmeal with protein powder. He does not eat starchy vegetables like corn and potatoes, sugar, or wheat of any kind. He tends to limit higher sugar fruits like tropical fruits and he also doesn’t drink alcohol. First thing that happened was he lost 35 pounds in like two months. Can you say jealous? The next thing that happened was more amazing than that: there was a night and day change in his narcolepsy symptoms. He is alert and awake all day and hasn’t suffered a cataplexy episode in months. He is a new person! I don’t think I could stress enough how amazing this is. We’re not sure what it is about the foods he is avoiding, whether it’s a gluten related thing, or insulin, or what, but the difference is profound. Regardless of the why, the results he has seen has made my little carb/sugar addict hubby swear these things off. Hooray!

The lesson I have learned here is that a healthy diet is so important to everyone. Whether we have a medical condition or not we need to pay attention to how foods are making us feel, how we are reacting to them. One of my current goals is to pay more attention. It’s amazing how we can all just trudge along feeling like crap and never realize it’s related to what we’re eating. Through simply paying attention we can find what works for us as individuals, in our diets and our workouts. I think doing this and not just what everyone else preaches is more important than anything.

Now, I just gotta convince him how much better he’d feel from a little cardio and weights…oh dear….

While most years I'd be feasting on Christmas candies, cookies, fudge, you name it...this year I'm making smarter choices with my VitaTops. Totally decadent and they keep me from feeling that 'diet frustration' we can get this time of year when we feel deprived.

The generous folks over at vitalicious.com are helping me celebrate my one year blog anniversary by giving:

I've made new friends, learned so much, and I'm oh so thankful for all of it. The ups, the downs, and everything in between.

Review: Personal Training With Jackie Crunch-Free Xtreme Abs

I haven't met a Jackie Warner workout DVD that I didn't love, and this is no exception.

I have been looking for a good core workout for almost a year now. Although I am in pretty good shape, if I do say so myself, my core is weak. I notice it most in my running and know it would improve that and more if I corrected it. In my search to remedy my weak core I've tried many, many core workouts, and this is by far my new favorite.

Crunch-Free Xtreme Abs is an awesome workout, I give it 5 stars, hands down. It is exactly what I've been looking for in a core workout.

The moves are not what I've found in typical core workouts (she means it when she says crunch-free) and I love that. As I've been doing some pretty tough workouts lately I was surprised that I could not complete all the moves. There were several in the floor work routine that I could only do half-way through and I was toast and had to go to the beginner modifications. I find this a good thing! It tells me this is exactly what I need. I am determined to kick this workouts butt and I will work at it until I can.

For this workout you will need: handweights to suit your ability (you could also do this without weights for beginners) and possibly a mat if that is your preference for floor work.

It is set up in two 15 minute workouts: one with moves you do standing with handweights (such as push & tap, split lunge flex, and alternating punches) and the other is floor work (with moves such as side oblique planks, weighted obliques, and bridge toe touches) some using weights and some not. You can choose from the menu to do just one or both workouts together for a kick butt core workout.

This DVD would be suitable for most fitness levels as there is someone demonstrating modified moves for beginners.

I am just a blogger, not a doctor, trainer, or any sort of professional. What you read here are my personal experiences and opinions. Of course, always consult your doctor before trying a diet, supplement, or new workout program. I was sent this DVD by the PR company. I receive no compensation for my posts or opinions and as always they are 100% honest and my own.

Blogger Labels

Healthy living bloggers, foodie bloggers, fitness bloggers, runner bloggers, weight loss bloggers...are just some of the labels I hear.

And I wonder: where do I fit? What am I, exactly?

I've tossed around the label healthy living blogger in some of my bios..but that doesn't seem quite right. I run, but am I a running blogger? I eat, but my blog isn't just about food, so I guess scratch foodie blogger off the list (somehow I don't think I'm cool enough for that niche anyway). I'm big into fitness, but am I a fit blogger? I don't quite feel qualified. Weight loss blogger I can identify with most I guess...but that doesn't really tell the whole picture. My blog is a lot about product reviews...is there such a niche?

I struggle with these labels. To which niche do I belong? Which blogger label do I affix proudly to my bios? Which tribe do I call home?

No clue. But what I do know is that I love my little blog here and plan to keep doing what I've done the past year, whether it fits neatly into a blogging label or not. I know that through my blog and twitter I've made so many wonderful friends this past year...from across the bloggy labels...and for that I'm thankful.

How about you...if you blog what do you consider yourself? What do you think about these labels, niches?

Stocking Stuffer Ideas for that Fitness Fan in Your Life

A safer option for runners and cyclists out on the roads.

Forget the candy, your long distance runner or triathlete will love these. When I trained for my marathon I was in love with the blue raspberry and watermelon kinds for my long runs. These and some water and I was set. They have flavors with caffeine and without.
Water bottles. We all know how important it is to stay well hydrated. Look for stainless steel or nalgene bottles, or bottles marked BPA free.
Resistance bands. These are great options for strength training, small and portable!
Rodale

A magazine subscription makes a great stocking stuffer. You can buy a copy of the current magazine or just stick in a little note. Then they get the gift of motivation and encouragement all year long.
A pedometer make an awesome stocking stuffer. It can be so much fun to track your steps everyday, try to beat yesterday's steps, etc.
Running socks. I have gone through many, many brands of running socks and these Thorlos Experias are my favorite. They are pricey, but worth it in my opinion. They have cushion in the right places, guard against blisters, and are still wicking. Plus, they come in lots of fun colors.
fitbook

Fitbook or new fitbook black. They're a 12 week journal for fitness, food, etc. A great way to plan, set goals, and keep track. I love, love these.

The Month I Lost 14.5 Pounds

That is what December 2010 will be remembered as.

Before you start lecturing me about 1 to 2 pounds a week, yada yada. Please hear my heart on this.

I set a goal of ringing in the New Year in the 160's. Then proceeded to mess around and go from 184 to 187 and now back to 184 since then. I have a habit of doing this in my life and I have had enough.

I didn't run my half marathon. I didn't enter to win a Fitbloggin ticket. I haven't finished my book. I sit right now at about the same weight I was last year this time. I get right up to the line where I can see success and good things and I fold. I've always prided myself in life as being someone who DOES what she says she is going to do. But is that true? Sure I've got excuses, and reasons (excuses in disguise), but the fact is: I'm afraid.

Fear is STILL holding me back. ENOUGH!

I made that goal and come hell or high water I am going to see it through. Period.

This is not about starvation or crazy antics. This is about work. I will DO THE WORK. There are 4.5 weeks in December. To lose 14.5 pounds I need to lose roughly 3 pounds a week. I've done it before. I know what it takes and I am committed...holidays or no holidays to REACH THIS GOAL.

I am digging in, I'm pulling out all the stops, I am ditching the excuses, I am making myself a priority, I am feeling the fear and doing it anyway, I am going to do the work, I am responsible

I need this success like nothing I've needed in my life before.
