Sweaty Bands Review

I have been searching for quite some time now for the perfect headband to run in. We're talking years here.

Then, I gave up on the perfect headband and settled for searching for one that would at least stay on my head through an entire run!

I like to put my hair in a pony tail when I run, then put a headband on to keep my bangs out of my face. 

I've tried pretty much everything from Target and Walmart and even more expensive headbands. All of them go flinging off my head some time mid-run. Very annoying, not to mention a waste of money. 

I have bought four or five different varieties and even resorted to tying some of the thinner ones in knots to make them luck. I tried using barrets to keep them in place...nope. They ALL would fly off at some point. I began to wonder if I just had a funny shaped head! For my marathon I wound up spraying the heck out of my bangs with hair spray to keep them out of my face...ew.

Blogging Through The Funk

I have been hiding. 

I haven't felt like I have anything worthy to say this week.

I've had a tough couple of weeks.

I had a really rough weekend. 

I felt hopeless and like an absolute failure in every aspect of my life. I felt like I am merely spinning my wheels with no results in so many areas of my life.

Now, I know I am not a failure, and I know I have hope...but that's how I felt this weekend. 

I ate lots and lots of junk and punked out on my long run. I made bad choices. I wallowed in my self-pity and bad attitude. Yes, these were the choices I made.

I felt like I'm getting nowhere; I felt like giving up.

But I haven't. I won't.

Today I choose to be positive, I choose to make good food choices, I choose to be thankful for the good in my life, I choose to hold on tight. I'll fake it 'til I make it if need be. I will get through this. I will be stronger for it.

Just wanted to be real. I struggle too. I think we all do. It's only if we give up that we truly…

Double Strawberry Smoothie Recipe

Made this smoothie this morning and it's so yummy, almost like a strawberry shake...but healthier of course.

Double Strawberry Smoothie:

3/4 cup unsweetened vanilla almond milk
1 serving Jay Robb Strawberry Whey Protein
1 cup frozen strawberries

Blend well in your blender. Yum!
For an added nutritional punch add a handful or two of fresh baby spinach.

August--Things I'm Loving Right Now

I've been wanting to do a video for this all month, but haven't gotten it done. Videos without children or cats wandering through are sometimes hard to come by around here! September's version will definitely be a vlog.

Things I'm Loving Right Now will be a new monthly addition to my blog. Just a shoutout to the fitness/weight loss/healthy living products I'm in love with at the moment. 

I know I've told you before how I love my Pumas. But now that I've ran in them all summer I'm telling you again! My half marathon training has made me love them even more. I'm downright smitten with them. Over the summer I've ran 5ks in them and began half marathon training in them. I've done everything from speed work to 8 miles long runs in these Pumas. They have been absolutely awesome. My feet are the happiest they've been since I started running. They've almost forgiven me for that whole Asics fiasco...almost.

Hi, I'm Kerri....and I'm a Calorie Counter

Yep, you read that right, I'm back to calorie counting. Using Sparkpeople on my Blackberry. I have not been able to get back to losing weight since, oh March or April maybe?! The scale goes up, the scales goes down a smidge, but NO real progress.

I am still flirting with Paleo. I am mostly struggling with the 'no milk products'. I love me my morning coffee with half and half, greek yogurt, and my whey protein (not sure if I'll give those up anytime soon? any paleo peeps want to explain why I should?). Other than that I've followed it so far. However currently I'm gaining weight. I'm up to 175. I still have 30 pounds to lose!

Enough. Calorie counting WORKS for me. No matter how much I WANT to listen to my body, be a mindful eater, go all hardcore Paleo, and all that jazz. I'm not THERE yet. I will be some day. However, that day is not today.

Today. I count calories.

Monday Miles--Running Films

I am absolutely hooked on running films. They inspire me, they encourage me, and strangely they make me weepy. I'm not exactly sure why running films affect me so deeply on an emotional level, but they absolutely do. I think it may be because they remind me of how far I've come

These films bring back that surge of emotion I felt at the end of my first 5k. That sense of accomplishment I felt after my first marathon. That feeling of conquering my inner fat chick I experienced after my fastest 5k. Running films also remind me of how much more I am capable of still. They make me want to stretch myself, to keep reaching, keep pushing my limits in my running. Whatever the reason, I love them!

The other day I got Ultramarathon Man: 50 Marathons, 50 States, 50 Days from Netflix. I have read both of Dean Karnazes books and absolutely loved this documentary. I cannot recommend it enough. Dean ran 50 marathons, in 50 states, in 50 days...WOW. Inspiration squared.

Grilled Chili/Lime Salmon

I've been trying to expand my protein horizons a little and so I picked up some salmon last time I went grocery shopping. Omega 3's and all that. 

Last night I grilled it, yum, yum, yum. My husband who isn't a big fish person said it was sooo good. I'm not good with measuring, recipes, etc. But here's what I did.

Grilled Chili/Lime Salmon
Spray one side of salmon with I Can't Believe It's Not Butter Spray, place that side down on the grill. (key limes were on sale I'm sure regular lime would work) Squeeze key limes over tops of salmon. Spray top side with I Can't Believe It's Not Butter Spray then sprinkle with garlic salt and chili powder. Cook a few minutes, then flip and squeeze key lime on other side as well, sprinkle with garlic salt and chili powder. Cook until done.
I paired it with some sweet potato fries and my kids even loved it!

Battling Hunger

I've become so disconnected with my natural hunger and fullness cues that I'm not really sure when I'm hungry and when I just want to eat these days. I'm really working on that right now. But still unless I am starving I cannot tell you whether I'm really and truly hungry or whether I just want to eat.

Some of you completely know where I am and some think it sounds bizarre, but it's where I'm at. It's why I struggle with intuitive eating, mindful eating, etc. I think I'm hungry when I'm just...NOT. It comes from years of alternating between ignoring my hunger in an attempt to lose weight and then eating past fullness habitually. I used to think I was hungry pretty much always, and I either fed that hunger constantly or ignored it constantly. 

That's why I have clung to counting calories in the past. If some chart can tell me how many calories to eat, then there's no more guesswork...just eat that much, period. But that can be a slippery sl…

Awesome Workout Challenge

Can you tell I like the word awesome?

Are you tried of it yet? LOL. I'm not.

OK, so Steve and I have both been quite the slackers lately in the weight loss department. Weight loss bloggers not losing weight...what the? No excuses here, we know it. We both went through the entire Awesome by August challenge quite lackluster; we definitely did not give it our all as we should have. 

So, we've cooked up a workout challenge as a sort of kick in the pants to motivate ourselves to GET MOVING in the right direction again. Of course it's called THE AWESOME WORKOUT CHALLENGE!! Twitter hashtag: #awesomeworkoutchallenge

Basically for every comment you leave over on Steve's post today we will workout for 30 seconds. Now, Steve and I are totally crazy in pretty good shape in spite of the extra weight we carry. Monday Miles--8 Mile Run and My Passionate Love For Sweaty Bands

I took some time off running this last week because my hip was sore. This weekend it was feeling pretty good so I went ahead and ran my 8 mile long run yesterday. It was a little tough. Mostly mentally tough. But I pushed through. 

I am being very careful about my hip this time around. If I think it needs rest, then rest it gets. No over-training and running a painful race this time around! I even decided this weekend that if it gets worse I may back off and skip my half. As hard as that is to say and even though I am really hoping that won't be the case, I have decided I will not be doing the whole injury-can't-run-for-months thing again.

Other than hip worries my training is going great. I feel strong. I'm enjoying playing with running gear again. I am wearing my Polar F6 while I run. It's a whole new perspective watching my heart rate while I run. I used to just …

Is that hilarious or what? 
If you don't live in a rural area or at least one where lots of people garden, this holiday may perplex you. Let me fill you in. Around here, and many parts of the country, it's about this time of year that we have zucchini running out of our ears! I have 5 large ones sitting on my counter right now and more that need picked. Then we always have those friendly, caring, giving neighbors who want to share their abundant zucchini crop with us too. It's not uncommon for me to have a box or two of zucchini that I have to do something with, quick. I have to get very creative with zucchini recipes! (You'd think we'd just plant less zucchini, but alas, no).

KETO Cocktails: The Lemon Drop

I love a good glass of red wine now and then, I mean it's practically a health food, right? ;) But sometimes I just want a cocktail. I'm all for moderation and having a drink now and then, but I'm just not down with the calorie, carb, and sugar counts of some of my favorites. Seriously, have you ever looked them up? Eek. Paleo Peppermint Mocha Coffee Creamer Recipe

It's just not the holidays for me without a Starbucks peppermint mocha (or white chocolate peppermint mocha, mmm). I generally splurge once or twice during the holiday season with the real thing. Since going keto paleo, however, I'm not sure if I will. Sometimes the sugar just isn't worth it!

Problem is I like them, miss them, and would really enjoy them all season long!
So..... I decided I wanted to tackle the peppermint mocha and come up with Paleo-friendly version. With this simple recipe, I can have a peppermint mocha anytime.

30 Easy Prep and Pack Whole30 Lunch Recipes

The Whole30Program is amazing. I highly recommend it. Every time I've done a Whole 30 I have felt AMAZING by the end. It's a very empowering experience. It is not however an easy one. Mostly because the food prep can take much more time if you're used to grab and go options. A little planning ahead and you can definitely make it through the 30 days.

KETO Paleo Pumpkin Spice Coffee Creamer Recipe

It's that time of year again. Pumpkin-time that is! Yes, yes, I want all. Things. Pumpkin. Right now. Pumpkin bread, pumpkin muffins, pumpkin spiced everyyyyythingggg.

However, I'm currently doing pretty strict Keto Paleo (more on that in another post). So no PSL's for me. Dangit.


Paleo Pumpkin Spice Coffee Creamer

Ingredients1 can Organic Classic Coconut Milk - If you do dairy you can use 2 cups of Heavy Whipping Cream here instead. 
1 Tablespoon Organic Pumpkin (YES, it has real pumpkin it it. Seriously, they all should...)
2 teaspoons Organic Cinnamon
1/2 teaspoon Organic Nutmeg
1/4 teaspoon Organic Cloves
1/8 teaspoon Organic Ginger
2 Tablespoons Grade B Organic Maple Syrup (completely optional- leave out for a sweetener-free, strict Paleo, 21 Day Sugar Detox, KETO, low carb, and Whole30 friendly coffee creamer. Or swap for Truvia or Monk Fruit.)

Add all ingredients into your blender and blend well (about a minute). Store in your refrigerator…

Easy Paleo Mashed Sweet Potatoes

Growing up the only encounter I had with sweet potatoes was at Thanksgiving dinner. I hesitate to even call them sweet potatoes though. They were more like sugar coated sugar, with a side of sugar. Seriously!
The recipe was to coat a baking dish in margarine, add diced sweet potatoes, top with more margarine and a healthy heaping of brown sugar. Bake. And then? At the end you top the whole thing with a bag of marshmallows and bake again.
