Feeling fabulous? Priceless.

I am going to try to sum up my thoughts about Paleo without getting too wordy. Apparently I have a lot to say about it!

Before I get into my final thoughts on the Paleo Diet I want to discuss my why. Why did I decide to go Paleo? A couple of reasons.

First, my husband. He has narcolepsy and eating Paleo/Primal has changed his life. He is functioning at a level we never dreamed possible. All because he changed his diet. It made no sense for me to continue eating all the foods that make him feel horrible right in front of his face. He struggles sometimes with feeling like there is 'nothing he can eat'. It helps him out so much for me to be cooking completely Paleo and filling the house with yummy Paleo friendly fare. Plus, if it made him feel so great, why not me too?

Second, I know my body responds best and I feel overall best on a lower carb diet. When I get too high in my carb consumption I just feel like crap. All around my choice to go Paleo just seemed a win win for my entire family.

Now on to my final thoughts on this little going Paleo experiment:

The thing that amazed me most about eating this way was how great I felt. I've talked this point to death in past blogs and videos, so I'll keep it simple. I had more energy, was more clear-headed, and overall just felt fabulous. So much so that I have no desire to stray too far from this way of eating.

The weight loss results on this plan completely have me stumped. I started out to find out whether Paleo was hype or help for weight loss, remember? Well, I lost a pound on the scale. In a month that's not great. But the inches I lost were amazing. Two inches off my waist? Wow. I feel it too. I feel thinner all over. My clothes are fitting looser. I actually blame myself for the lackluster scale performance. I think I could have tweaked my diet and workouts a little more and had better scale results, but I got over the hump of 30 days eating this way without feeling deprived. Since I'm looking long term at eating Paleo that's a win to me! So, is it hype or help? I am going to say help. Big Time.

I think the mental/emotional benefits (for me, not making a blanket statement here) of this way of eating may trump everything else though. I haven't had to track calories. I do not feel panicky or obsessive about my eating or my weight. My urge to binge eat, compulsively eat, any of those previous self destructive behaviors, seem to be gone. Perhaps because I've removed all trigger foods from the house and I feel physically satiated from Paleo foods? Maybe because I don't get the blood sugar swings and feel famished or over-hungry ever? I'm not sure why. But, what I do know is that I feel like eating Paleo sets me up for success in all these areas. Is it all in my head? Could be. But it works for me. And that is good enough for me.

Paleo Week 3 Weigh In

As usual, I'll just start with the numbers. My results on the Paleo diet so far:

Week 1 Stats
Weight 177
BF% 32.4%
Waist 34.5
Right Thigh 21.5
Right Calf 14.75
Right Arm 12

Week 2 Stats
Weight 176
BF% 32.2%
Waist 34
Right Thigh 21.25
Right Calf 14.75
Right Arm 12
Hips 42.5

Week 3 Stats
Weight 176
BF% 31.8% (using an Omron BF Monitor)
Waist 33.5
Right Thigh 21
Right Calf 14.75
Right Arm 12
Hips 42

I am baffled by my results (physical and otherwise) so far with eating Paleo. Weight loss has been only 1 pound total in 3 weeks, but I am losing inches like mad! I can feel it too. I feel thinner all over. My clothes are lose. My stomach is noticeably smaller! I've never experienced anything like this. Normally (for me) the scale and inches play nice. It's a good thing I did measurements as well as using the scale.

I still feel fanfriggintastic and I'm not stressed out or obsessed over what the scale is doing. I have made peace with food and how I'm eating (you have no idea how incredible that statement is for me). It feels awesome. I don't ever remember feeling this relaxed about food and my weight. My husband commented the same thing last night. And also, apparently my moods are much more pleasant ;).

My eating patterns/behaviors overall are making some amazing changes. I haven't binged or even had the urge to binge AT ALL in the last 3 weeks. That alone amazes me. Like I said, I just feel at peace with food. That's the only way I can put it. I'm also learning to listen to my body and it's hunger/fullness cues again. It amazes me how much I used calorie counting as a crutch. I wasn't really paying attention to my body, I was just eating how much I 'should' eat. Now I eat when I'm hungry and stop when I'm full. When I'm not hungry I don't eat. Crazy stuff here. I've eaten past full a few times and felt it, didn't beat myself up, and moved on.

Whatever the results from this little experiment wind up being I plan to stick to some version of paleo/primal permanently. Next month I will be going full Primal (to see how I like that), then I plan to decide on what is best for me and my body (not to mention my family). I think there is a full spectrum of paleo/primal eating and people fall along it differently. I hope to find my 'happy place' on that spectrum. Mainly, I just have no urge to change how great I feel. So, we'll see where I wind up...

Paleo Friendly Flavored Coffee Creamer Recipe

Since going Paleo I've tried everything in my coffee and loved nothing.

Someone suggested I google: Primal Coconut 'Crack' Creamer. This is what I came up with: Original recipe

I altered it a bit because the canned coconut milk (I think it's the guar gum) was bothering me and I'm doing NO sweeteners this month (nope, not even stevia).

This recipe is sweetener and guar gum free.

My Recipe:
1 cup water
3 tsp Tropical Traditions Coconut Cream Concentrate
1 Pasteurized Egg
2 Tablespoons Tropical Traditions Coconut Oil (melted)
1 tsp Organic Vanilla Extract
1 tsp Cinnamon
Dash Nutmeg
Throw everything together in the blender (or use a hand mixer). Mix well. Refrigerate.

Mine turned out a little runnier than the recipe I saw online, but it's yummy! It separates a little in the refrigerator, I just stir it up each time before using. I'm a happy coffee loving paleo girl now ;)

Products mentioned:
1-Pint (16-oz) - Coconut Cream Concentrate

32-oz. - Gold Label Virgin Coconut Oil - 1 quart

PS I have a giveaway going on over at my facebook page.

FTC disclaimer: I received the coconut oil and the eggs mentioned in this post for my review. I am under no obligation to talk about them, but I chose to. I receive no compensation for my post and opinions are my own. All other items mentioned I purchased.

Paleo Week 2 Check In

First, to the numbers:

Week 1 Stats
Weight 177
BF% 32.4%
Waist 34.5
Right Thigh 21.5
Right Calf 14.75
Right Arm 12

Week 2 Stats
Weight 176
BF% 32.2%
Waist 34
Right Thigh 21.25
Right Calf 14.75
Right Arm 12
Hips (which I forgot to measure the first 2 weeks) 42.5

Starting to see things move in the right direction. One pound down and down a little in my measurements. Glad to see it.

If you're interested in detailed tracking of what foods I'm eating, etc you can find my daily Going Paleo vlogs here.

I am starting to realize that Paleo means a lot of different things to different people. Not wildly different, but it can get a little tough when looking for what exactly to tweak to get better results. I'm thinking I should have picked a specific book (I'm liking Robb Wolf's best) to follow for this month. For instance fruit, there are differing opinions on how much someone trying to lose weight on Paleo should eat. The same with nuts and even fats. Depending where you look you will find something different.

So, I am just going to take in all the information and then try to go with what I think is best for my body.

My workouts were a little less frequent than I'm used to. Mostly because they were much more effective and I was SORE. After the impromptu workout I did while watching my boys play I was seriously sore for three days! Boosted my confidence that I do know what to do and don't always have to rely on a DVD or something else. I definitely pushed myself harder than I have for a while.

I still feel fantastic. So fantastic that I don't think I will roam too far from this way of eating. I'm planning to 'go Primal' for September. Then I will probably settle on some version of Paleo/Primal to stick with. Oh no, will I have to rename my blog?! ;)

Paleo Week 1 Check In

First, I'll get right to the numbers of my first week results on the Paleo diet.

Beginning Stats
Weight 177
BF% 32.5%
Waist 34.5
Right Thigh 21.5
Right Calf 14.75
Right Arm 12

Week 1 Stats
Weight 177
BF% 32.4%
Waist 34.5
Right Thigh 21.5
Right Calf 14.75
Right Arm 12

Exactly the same. The .1 difference on the BF monitor is nothing, readings on that can vary. Normally I might be discouraged, disappointed, or annoyed, but I'm not. I knew I hadn't lost anything this week, but honestly, from the amount of nuts and fruit (along with all the other yummy foods) I had over the weekend and all week long really, I would normally have expected a gain. I'm focusing on the positive, changing a few things this next week, and moving on.

What I'm loving about Paleo so far:
  • Not having to count calories or track obsessively. Love this. Mentally this is priceless to me. I am tracking via my daily vlogs on Adventures in Tracking, but that's it. I have no idea how many calories, carbs, or protein grams I've consumed. It's kind of nice. I am simply trying to be mindful of when I'm hungry, when I'm full, not over-eating and all that. It's a whole new realm for me.
  • Zero urge to binge. None.
  • Energy/clear head. All week I've kept saying over and over how great I feel, and that's been the main thing I've noticed for week one. I feel fabulous. Which sort of shines a light on how not fabulous I had been feeling.
  • The food. The only thing I'm missing so far is half & half in my coffee. I am loving all the new recipes I've been trying. My husband is too. He eats modified paleo (he eats some dairy) because of his narcolepsy. (Well, he doesn't know he eats 'paleo', it's not because he read the book or anything, but he does. It has made a huge difference in his health.) He loves that I'm making new, exciting dishes that are perfect for how he eats. I think he was getting very bored with his food lately.
  • I feel great. Oh wait, I've said that before? OK, moving on then...
  • Fruit. I love that it's not a crazy low carb thing that excludes fruit completely. It is summer, fruit is fantastic (and cheap) right now and I'm going to enjoy it.
  • The paleo community. I'm finding blogs, twitter folks, podcasts, you name it, surrounding paleo. It's awesome.
My first week went great. No, I didn't lose weight, but I have had other positive changes. Like how I'm feeling, my energy levels, etc. I am definitely sticking this out the 30 days. I think that planning ahead and setting myself up for success this time around has made all the difference.

My workouts were not consistent, so I definitely need to work on that this next week.
I ordered The Paleo Diet last week and I also ordered Robb Wolf's book, The Paleo Solution, it should be here today or tomorrow. I had read them both previously from the library. But I want to own both of them so I can refer back. This week I need to figure out what to tweak so that I'm losing fat. I know I need to cut back on nuts. That is the first thing I'll do. But I want to see what other suggestions the books have that I have probably forgotten.
I love the cookbook I ordered. I'll be reviewing that this week. It has been a HUGE help

Tropical Traditions sent me some of their coconut oil to try. 32-oz. - Gold Label Virgin Coconut Oil - 1 quart It's fantastic. Hubby seems to want to cook everything in coconut oil!

I also ordered some fo their Coconut Cream Concentrate to try in my coffee, smoothies, etc. 1-Pint (16-oz) - Coconut Cream Concentrate
I think the guar gum in others is bothering me.

I think my August Things I'm Loving video is going to be pretty long! SO many new things I'm finding and falling in love with this month.

Week 1 has been awesome. On to week 2!

The Paleo Diet Experiment Starting Stats

I have read the previous version of The Paleo Diet; I just ordered this updated version.
Today is Day 1 of my Paleo Hype or Help experiment, and I have to say I'm pretty excited to go Paleo for a month. I feel very prepared and ready to make it a fun month (or longer, who knows?). I LOVE trying something new. First, my beginning stats:

Beginning Stats
Weight 177
BF% 32.5%
Waist 34.5
Right Thigh 21.5
Right Calf 14.75
Right Arm 12

I've back-slid a tiny bit the last week. It's been hot, I've been busy, blah blah I've been making excuses to myself. Enough. I am excited to have a little re-set here. My meals are planned, my cupboards are filled with healthy Paleo foods, I'm ready!

For my workouts during this experiment I will be training for my 5k and trying out some new Cathe workouts I ordered. Click here to visit Cathe dot Com. I'll also probably throw in some random workout DVDs here and there; I have several to review right now. I aim for 5 or 6 days of workouts. I'll track my workouts and my eating over at Adventures in Tracking if you're interested in exactly what workouts I do.

I've planned, I've shopped, I've prepared, now I just need to DO. So, is Paleo hype or help for weight loss? Let's find out!

My final 30 day results are here
