Hype or Help: Jillian Michaels Ripped in 30 Review

If you're not familiar with my Hype or Help experiments: I take a plan, workout, or product and put it to the test. I choose a certain amount of time (often 30 days) and test out their claims. Each week I update my progress and at the end post my final results, thoughts, and review. Each product will be judged hype or help and rated on a 5 star system.

Next in this series I am reviewing: Jillian Michaels Ripped in 30

Jillian promises "4 weeks 4 incredible workouts to get you in insane shape" (from the front of the DVD). I will be following the workout plan and the diet plan online that you can get when you purchase this DVD. In the beginning of the DVD Jillian says to workout 5 or 6 days a week (although elsewhere she says every day), I will be doing the workouts 6 days a week. What results will I see? I'm excited to find out.

Brooklyn Fit Chick Guest Post: Why I Wear a Helmet

Hello all of you “Kat Does Diets” fans! Kerri was kind enough to ask me to do a guest posting on her Blog so today is the day.

My name is Margo and my Blog is called “Brooklyn Fit Chick.” You can follow me here: http://brooklynfitchick.typepad.com/brooklyn-fit-chick/.

I am a fitness instructor, personal trainer and avid cyclist. You can find all kinds of fun things on “Brooklyn Fit Chick” and I look forward to hearing your feedback on it soon.

Feel free to follow me on Twitter: @BrooklynFitChik (note spelling on Twitter)

I am also on Facebook: “Brooklyn FitChick”

Today I wanted to talk about the very personal reason that I always, absolutely, and without exception wear a helmet whenever I ride my bike (I call her Trixie!) Hope you enjoy it.

I have a love/hate relationship with my bike helmet. While it offers me protection should I ever need it and I promised my mother to absolutely, positively, without exception, never, ever go for a ride without it--I hate the way it looks and how…

It's My Birthday, I'll Giveaway If I Want To...

Hooooooray! I turn 35 today.

I am celebrating me today. Yep. I am.

It feels awesome to be in a place in my life that I can say that...but this post isn't really about me...it's about you!!

I want to say thank you to all of you for being so. danged. awesome.

My mom took the boys last night, so I slept in this morning. I lazily rolled out of bed at 8 am, hubby got me coffee (I know, right?), and I decided to check my blog/facebook/twitter. Oh. My. Goodness. I was overwhelmed by the love!

Thank you all for making my birthday so great!!

And, like I said...this post is really about you. Thanking you...all of my readers. Last year I started a little tradition on my blog for my birthday. While I do LOVE getting gifts on my birthday, I also like giving them. So every year on my birthday I hope to do a giveaway here. Not just any old thing, but things I love or that are meaningful to me. Maybe not fancy and expensive, but from me (there's your disclaimer FTC, this is not sponsored).

Think Thin Bars Review

Next in my series of protein bar reviews is Think Thin Bars:
Loved this brand. All the flavors I've tried have been great. Definitely one of my favorites from the millions I tried for this review series. I've already purchased more boxes of these, which is always a good indication of how much I like a protein bar! Since this video I've tried the Chocolate Espresso and am in love with it too. I know, chocolate, coffee, and protein...not surprising I'm smitten.

FYI these are gluten free.

Have you tried these before?

Guest Post Amy From Fruit Salad Life

Hey everyone! I’m Amy, from over at Fruit Salad Life. I want to cover something that I’ve been thinking a lot about lately. It's so easy to get wrapped up in extremes when you're on a quest to lose weight and get fit (finally!). We've all been there. Starting Monday, you're going to run 4 days a week, do yoga 3 days a week, go to 2 spinning classes, eat zero carbs, drink 10 glasses of water a day, get 8 hours of sleep, and be the happiest, healthiest, and fittest that you've ever been!
I can't even begin to count the number of times I've written plans like this down. The plan would be incredibly rigid, and if I slacked off a bit, more often than not I'd completely throw in the towel. The first time I consciously remember doing this was the summer before sophomore year of high school when I would bring measly lunches of Triscuits and hummus to my job as a camp counselor.
My quirky plans increased with my income. I fell into a costly Kombucha-a-day habit, j…

What Do I Recommend?

Lately I've been getting more reader emails. Which I love. (Like, love love ;)

But I've noticed a theme amongst the questions I'm asked lately. That theme is my recommendations. I'm flattered that people care! I regularly do my Things I'm Loving Right Now videos, but don't always address these specific things. I will always try to answer every reader email I receive (except the pervs, nope, not gonna happen) but I figured I'd address these specific questions I've received a lot in a post.

I'm no professional and I can only give MY opinion. But again, people are asking me...so, in choosing these I asked myself: what do I love enough I'd recommend it to a friend?

Single Workout DVDs

Perspective

I don't often write on things like this, but my blog is for me, and I need to write this.

The last week or so I've been dealt a huge dose of perspective. I've been tweeting, facebooking, and emailing with readers and blog friends that are struggling. I'm not talking struggling with the last 20-25 pounds like I am, but really struggling. People who don't just wish they looked better in their jeans, but people who's health and even lives are at risk here. People who have large amounts of weight to lose and just can't seem to do it. They've tried and failed so many times they don't know If they can stand another time of falling down. Some seem to have lost hope.
These interactions have been rough.
I hear the pain and desperation in their voices and I remember it so well. I was there. I remember feeling like it was impossible, feeling like giving up on myself, feeling like I had no hope. I remember feeling that food controlled me, that I couldn't sto…

New Smoothie Obsession (Recipe)

Do your eating habits change in the summertime? Mine definitely do. As the temperature goes up and up I start craving fresh fruit like crazy. I tend to want to eat lighter overall. It's not really a choice, I just naturally tend that way. Smoothies become a huge staple in my diet. In fact, after 10 AM I could LIVE on smoothies. There are days I will have 3 and days I won't have any.

Because they are being used as snacks and even meals in the summer I try to cram as much  nutrition as I can into my smoothies. My smoothie recipes get pretty creative.

I always start with a base of 1 cup almond milk and 1 scoop of protein powder. Then I add whatever I'm feeling like. Frozen fruit like strawberries, blueberries, bananas, or peaches (I find frozen fruit gives a better shake-like consistency). Or a nut butter like peanut butter, almond butter, or cashew butter (I like these with vanilla or chocolate protein powder). Random things like spinach, oats, or bee pollen (hey, I've re…

2 to 1 Protein Bars by MetraGenix Review

I promised to start this review series a while back following some twitter/email conversations I had with people about the overwhelming choices of protein bars. Several of you, just like me, wanted a quick easy protein bar option, but were overwhelmed by all the choices. Since then I've tried many, many and these and 2:1 Protein Bars were among my favorites: I found the best deal on these at bodybuilding.com and vitacost.com although they don't have every flavor (I have found both of those have very fast shipping). GNC also carries them, but the price is higher. I also found them at supplementwarehouse.com but I've never shopped there before. Of course you can always get all the flavors at  www.2to1proteinbars.com/.
Disclaimer: After falling in love with this brand I contacted this company and they were gracious enough to send me samples for this post. I received no compensation for this post. As always opinions are 100% honest and my own. None of the above links are affil…

HOT New Running Shoes aka Puma FAAS 500 Review

What better way to celebrate National Running Day than a shoe review? Today I'd like to review and share my experience with the PUMA FAAS 500 running shoe. From puma.com:

KETO Cocktails: The Lemon Drop

I love a good glass of red wine now and then, I mean it's practically a health food, right? ;) But sometimes I just want a cocktail. I'm all for moderation and having a drink now and then, but I'm just not down with the calorie, carb, and sugar counts of some of my favorites. Seriously, have you ever looked them up? Eek. So, I've set to work at converting my favorite cocktail recipes to be more keto diet friendly!

The first cocktail recipe I'm tackling is the keto lemon drop. I used to love these, but haven't had one in years because of the sugar in them. In my early twenties I had a friend who used to make them for me all the time. We would have a shaker full of these, a good dinner, and a chick flick on a weeknight, it was kind of bliss. Her recipe called for so. much. SUGAR though! Looking back I think she may have used a wee bit more sugar than most, but they were really good.

I think my keto-ized recipe comes pretty dang close to those delicious memories! It…

What is 75 Hard #75Hard: Documenting My Experience With The 75 Hard Challenge

January 1, I embarked on an interesting journey; I decided to start the 75 Hard Challenge (scroll to the bottom of the post for my updated journal on my progress. I've gotten a lot of questions on this program and what it is exactly, what the rules are, etc. So...

What is 75 Hard? It's a mental toughness skills development challenge started by Andy Frisella. His premise is that mental toughness is a skill and therefore can be learned, practiced, and honed. Andy designed this challenge to cultivate: confidence, self-belief, self-esteem, self-worth, endurance, fortitude, grit, perseverance, self-discipline, endurance, resilience... and all of the skills inside the scope of mental toughness.  Check out the podcast that started it all for all the info from Andy himself: https://andyfrisella.com/blogs/mfceo-project-podcast/75hard-a-75-day-tactical-guide-to-winning-the-war-with-yourself-with-andy-frisella-mfceo291 Note that if f-bombs are going to offend you this is not for you.

Cinnamon Vanilla KETO Coffee Creamer Recipe

There are tons of keto coffee creamer products flooding the market right now. Some are fantastic options. Some chock full of nasty ingredients. But most of them are on the pricey side.

I decided to work on some clean, more budget-friendly, keto coffee creamer recipes we can easily make at home! (Check out my Keto Peppermint Mocha Coffee Creamer too.)⠀

This dairy-free Cinnamon Vanilla Keto Coffee Creamer is definitely one of my favorites. I just love cinnamon coffees. They're delicious. Plus, cinnamon is supposed to be good for blood sugar control. Win-win.

Paleo Smoky Grilled Pineapple Burgers

Since going Paleo my family has fallen even more in love with our grill. Paleo and grilling just work well together. The past couple of years I've even been stepping outside my grilling comfort zone more and more. Grilling things I'd never thought to have grilled before and trying new flavor combinations. I have to say I'm pretty thrilled with the results of most of my flavor experiments.

In the past I'd never have thought to grill fruit, but it's amazing. Grilling fruit and adding it to traditionally savory dishes? Brilliant.

Oh yes, and? New rule: every burger recipe for the rest of forever must contain grilled pineapple. OK, maybe more of a guideline. It's a seriously delicious combination though.

This Smoky Grilled Pineapple Burger is always a crowd-pleaser at my house. It's not only Paleo, but Whole30, glutenfree, lower carb, and clean eating friendly. I promise you won't miss the bun!

30 Easy Prep and Pack Whole30 Lunch Recipes

The Whole30Program is amazing. I highly recommend it. Every time I've done a Whole 30 I have felt AMAZING by the end. It's a very empowering experience. It is not however an easy one. Mostly because the food prep can take much more time if you're used to grab and go options. A little planning ahead and you can definitely make it through the 30 days.

When it comes to Whole30 lunches, 3 things worked best for me:

Quick and easy salads.Prepping food on Sunday.Cooking too much at dinner and eating leftovers for lunch the next day.
I thought I'd share 30 of the awesome Whole30 lunch recipes I've found from my favorite bloggers (and a few from me!). I've included all three options I listed above. Some quick and easy salads, some to prep an entire recipe on the weekend and then portion them for lunches that week, and some to be cooked for dinner and the leftovers packed for lunch the next day. Play around and see what works best for you.

This list of 30 Whole30 Lunch Reci…

KETO Hot Cocoa Pancakes

OK, I know I've been on quite the low carb pancake tangent lately, but THESE! Seriously, these are yummtastic. Yummazing? Ya, they're really good. They just might be my favorite recipe I've ever done. Ever. OK, that might be my paleo apple crisp recipe, but that's not low carb...ooo, I wonder if I could tweak that low carb...

That would be brilliant!

You know, bloggers area always talking seo this and seo that (seo stands for search engine optimization if you're not a blogger) and I'm just over here yammering. I'm pretty sure when google's spider crawlers (anyone shiver at that word picture? eesh) get to FitViews they just think, "Yeesh, move along. Nothing to see here." Ha ha ha!

Anyway, pancakes. KETO Hot Cocoa Low Carb Pancakes no less. So good.

As I've mentioned before I'm back to low carb (keto actually) and developing new recipes to make it easier to stick with. I find I just plain feel great when I eat ketogenic, and I definitely h…

Keto Paleo Friendly Coffee Creamer Recipe

Going keto paleo has me missing one thing: the organic grass-fed half-and-half I'd been having in my coffee. Since going paleo over a year ago I've searched and searched and just never found anything else I love in my coffee. I'd just about given up on a keto paleo-friendly coffee creamer!

I was almost to resign myself to black coffee forever, but then I decided to resort again to trying to make my own. This version is simple and quite delicious. Not only is it keto paleo, but Whole30 and 21 Day Sugar Detox friendly as well.

Keto Paleo Cinnamon Vanilla Coffee Creamer
Ingredients
1 can Organic Canned Coconut Milk(the kind in the carton just won't do it)
1 teaspoon Cinnamon Vietnamese Organic
1 teaspoon Organic Pure Vanilla for 100% Whole30 compliant swap for vanilla powder
2 teaspoons raw local honey or Organic Maple Syrup (optional, leave out for KETO, Whole30, or 21DSD)

Directions
Blend all ingredients well in your blender. Store in the refrigerator (the cinnamon tends to set…

Vanilla Maple Iced Coffee

It's no secret that I'm madly in love with coffee. Hot coffee, iced coffee, plain coffee, flavored coffee, espresso, latte, cappuccino... you name it I want to marinate in it.

People often ask me if coffee is Paleo. My answer: maybe not strict Paleo, but I. Don't. Care. Cavemen did NOT drink coffee some declare. To this I reply: I am convinced that cavepeople of my ancestral line were roasting beans, crushing them, and pouring hot water over them thousands of years ahead of their time.

OK, but seriously, I am Paleo because of the benefits I have seen eating this way. My food choices are more about how a food affects me than whether or not a caveman consumed it. Also, generally speaking, I think most people drink coffee on Paleo.

Whether or not coffee itself is Paleo, the things we add to it can be absolutely NOT Paleo. I am definitely known to splurge on a (non-Paleo) Starbucks now and then, but most of the time I prefer to keep my coffee concoctions Paleo.

This iced-coffee …

The Killer Jillian 30-Day Workout Rotation #killerjillian

If you've visited FitViews before you have probably noticed I'm rather fond of Jillian Michaels at-home workouts. I own virtually all she has and have reviewed many on this blog. They're just good, solid workouts that give me great results.
I'm particularly fond of Jillian programs, calendars, and challenges. I've blogged through Body Revolution and BodyShred. I vlogged through the 30 Day Shred. Pretty much every Jillian challenge set forth I've delightedly owned.
But I'm feeling a bit "been there done that" lately. I want a new Jillian challenge. Something fresh, something challenging, something different. Something new to motivate me and push me. So, I decided to come up with my own! I'm calling it the #KillerJillian Challenge.

The #KillerJillianBefore I launch into the calendar, a little disclaimer: This challenge is in no way endorsed by Jillian Michaels. It's just a for-fun workout calendar I came up with. Also, I'm not a trainer, d…
