Since going Paleo my family has fallen even more in love with our grill. Paleo and grilling just work well together. The past couple of years I've even been stepping outside my grilling comfort zone more and more. Grilling things I'd never thought to have grilled before and trying new flavor combinations. I have to say I'm pretty thrilled with the results of most of my flavor experiments. In the past I'd never have thought to grill fruit, but it's amazing. Grilling fruit and adding it to traditionally savory dishes? Brilliant. Oh yes, and? New rule: every burger recipe for the rest of forever must contain grilled pineapple. OK, maybe more of a guideline. It's a seriously delicious combination though. This Smoky Grilled Pineapple Burger is always a crowd-pleaser at my house. It's not only Paleo, but Whole30, glutenfree, lower carb, and clean eating friendly. I promise you won't miss the bun! paleo, grilled pineapple burger, smoky
Do your eating habits change in the summertime? Mine definitely do. As the temperature goes up and up I start craving fresh fruit like crazy. I tend to want to eat lighter overall. It's not really a choice, I just naturally tend that way. Smoothies become a huge staple in my diet. In fact, after 10 AM I could LIVE on smoothies. There are days I will have 3 and days I won't have any.
Because they are being used as snacks and even meals in the summer I try to cram as much nutrition as I can into my smoothies. My smoothie recipes get pretty creative.
I always start with a base of 1 cup almond milk and 1 scoop of protein powder. Then I add whatever I'm feeling like. Frozen fruit like strawberries, blueberries, bananas, or peaches (I find frozen fruit gives a better shake-like consistency). Or a nut butter like peanut butter, almond butter, or cashew butter (I like these with vanilla or chocolate protein powder). Random things like spinach, oats, or bee pollen (hey, I've read it's good for you!). Anything to cram my nutritional needs into these yummy summertime treats.
Lately on hot afternoons this recipe has been hitting the spot:
Green Tea Vanilla Protein Smoothie
1 cup unsweetened vanilla almond milk
1 scoop vanilla protein powder (I use BSN Lean Dessert Protein or Syntha 6 here)
1 cup melon balls (any kind) this is optional, I make it both ways.
1 tsp green matcha tea (it's the powdered kind, I buy online)
Handful of ice to desired consistency.
Throw that all in a blender and blend well. Yum! Reminds me a little of a Starbucks green tea frap.

That sounds delish! Refreshing! I use almond milk and vanilla protein powder as a base, as well and from there, the sky's the limit! I have found lately that using raw greens gives me...ahem...gas, so I've been using a powdered greens product. Can't remember the name of it right now. Lately I've also been adding chia seeds!
ReplyDeleteThat looks YUMMY!
ReplyDeleteSounds delicious! I haven't made a smoothie in a long time! I should start looking into it :)
ReplyDeleteSounds yummy! Time to bust out the blender! I need to remember to keep more frozen fruit on hand. You're right, the fresh stuff doesn't give it the right consistency. Thanks for sharing!
ReplyDeleteMelon balls, really? I would never have thought to add that. Sounds really refreshing. Have you tried coconut milk in this smoothie, that might be yum too?
ReplyDeleteI, too, am a big smoothie fan, now that it is a million degrees outside. My favorite additions at the moment are banana, a little cocoa powder, and some type of milk (currently coconut). Mucho good. Sometimes, even though it adds no nutritional value, I'll toss a tablespoon of some flavored liquid coffee creamer in for extra flavor. Mucho delicioso!
ReplyDeleteThat looks AWESOME! I want one immediately!
ReplyDeleteI'm considering making one with kale in it. I've seen the spinach ones, so why not kale? It's just sitting in the fridge going bad.
